
CANNES — The 79th annual Cannes Film Festival witnessed a historic moment for regional Indian cinema last night. Actor Roopi Gill made a spectacular red carpet debut at the Palais des Festivals.
Arriving for the festival’s high-profile film market, Gill represents her upcoming Punjabi feature film, Chardikala. Observers on the Croisette noted that her presence marks a major shift. The global spotlight is expanding beyond Bollywood to embrace rich, regional storytelling from India.
The film is directed by Amarjit Singh Saron and co-stars Ammy Virk. It is currently securing global distribution deals ahead of its worldwide theatrical release on 29 May 2026.
